China has called on Japan to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and avoid provocative actions regarding the Taiwan region, following recent remarks by Japanese officials. At a press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that Japan must honor historical commitments outlined in bilateral political documents.
The remarks came after media reports indicated that senior Japanese officials defended Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent Taiwan-related statements, asserting no change in Tokyo's stance. Mao countered that Japan's claims of an unchanged position must be matched with concrete actions, urging Tokyo to retract what China views as erroneous comments.
Mao reiterated that Taiwan's return to China after World War II forms an integral part of the post-war international order. "No one has the right to alter this historical and legal fact," she stated, warning against attempts to conflate regional security concerns with the Taiwan question.
The spokesperson stressed that cross-strait relations remain a matter of China's internal affairs, urging Japan to avoid "blurring concepts" or undermining regional stability. Analysts suggest the exchange reflects heightened sensitivities as Asian powers navigate evolving security dynamics in 2025.
