Guangzhou's iconic skyline shimmered with cultural symbolism as the 2025 International Light Festival launched Sunday, featuring the triumphant return of the viral Aoyu fish lantern. The 15-meter floating installation, first seen during November 9's National Games opening ceremony, now anchors a month-long celebration blending Lingnan heritage with cutting-edge illumination technology.
In a historic synchronization, Canton Tower partnered with the Pearl River New City's East and West Towers for the first coordinated light show. Projections featuring traditional qilin mythological creatures danced across the trio of landmarks, their surfaces transformed into canvases showcasing Guangdong's cultural legacy.
"This year's festival bridges our sporting spirit with artistic innovation," stated Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture spokesperson Li Wei during the ceremony. "The Aoyu's return symbolizes both our marine heritage and the energy flowing from the National Games into urban revitalization."
Running through December 20, the festival features 38 light installations across Haixinsha Square and Ersha Island, with nightly drone shows scheduled every weekend. Tourism officials anticipate over 2 million visitors to the event, which coincides with Guangdong's winter travel promotion campaign.
