China Eastern Resumes India Flights After 5-Year Hiatus

China Eastern Airlines has restarted direct flights between the Chinese mainland and India this week, marking the first regular commercial air services between the two nations since operations were suspended in late 2020. The resumed Shanghai-Mumbai route will initially operate three weekly flights using Airbus A330 aircraft.

The move comes as bilateral trade between China and India reached $136 billion in the first three quarters of 2025, according to customs data. A China Eastern spokesperson stated: "This resumption reflects growing commercial demand and our commitment to rebuilding vital air links across Asia."

Aviation analysts note the development aligns with broader recovery trends in Asia's travel sector, with international seat capacity across the region now exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 12%. The resumption follows recent agreements between civil aviation authorities from both countries to gradually restore flight frequencies.

Business travelers and diaspora communities are expected to be primary beneficiaries, with the route providing critical connectivity for technology, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing sectors. Tourism officials anticipate increased cultural exchange ahead of India's peak winter travel season.
