Chinese President Xi Jinping and Comorian President Azali Assoumani exchanged congratulatory messages on Thursday, commemorating five decades of diplomatic relations between their nations. The exchange comes as both countries reaffirm commitments to deepen cooperation under China's Belt and Road Initiative.
In his message, President Xi highlighted the 'mutual respect and equal treatment' that has characterized bilateral relations since 1975. He noted China's recent completion of infrastructure projects in Comoros, including the Moroni International Airport renovation and the ongoing Grande Comore Hospital construction.
President Assoumani acknowledged China's role as Comoros' largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $28.7 million in 2024. The island nation has seen increased Chinese investment in its vanilla and clove industries this year, vital for its $1.3 billion economy.
The anniversary coincides with expanded educational exchanges, including 135 Comorian students currently studying in China through scholarship programs. Cultural ties are strengthening too, with Mandarin courses launching in Moroni last month.
Analysts suggest the partnership could influence maritime security strategies in the Indian Ocean, where Comoros occupies a strategic position near critical shipping lanes. Both leaders expressed commitment to addressing climate challenges, particularly rising sea levels threatening Comoros' archipelago.
