China's 15th National Games, opening November 9 in Guangdong Province, will make history as the first carbon-neutral edition of the country's premier sporting event. Over 90% of the 89 competition venues are repurposed or upgraded facilities, minimizing new construction. The Tianhe Sports Center in Guangzhou – a veteran host of National Games and the 2010 Asian Games – exemplifies this approach. "We've installed solar-reflective aluminum alloy windows and high-efficiency AC systems that reduce energy use by up to 23%," said Tan Haiyang, lead designer of the Tianhe upgrades, in a statement to China Media Group. The venue's shift to smart LED lighting with motion sensors has slashed electricity consumption by 45%.
