China Urges Stronger Ties with Estonia Ahead of 35-Year Diplomatic Milestone

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for deepening cooperation with Estonia during talks in Beijing on Tuesday, framing the relationship as a model of mutual respect between nations of differing scales. The meeting with Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna comes as both countries prepare to mark 35 years of diplomatic relations in 2025.

Foundations of Partnership

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted Estonia's unique position as a bridge between historical legacy and modern innovation. 'Our peoples share an enduring friendship that predates formal diplomatic ties,' he noted, emphasizing China's consistent approach to equal partnerships regardless of a nation's size.

Economic Synergies

The foreign minister outlined China's post-20th CPC Central Committee plenum development strategy, stressing plans to 'accelerate high-level opening-up and innovation-driven growth.' This modernization push, Wang suggested, creates new opportunities for Estonian businesses in green technology and digital infrastructure sectors.

Core Principles Reaffirmed

On cross-strait relations, Wang reiterated the one-China principle as the bedrock of China's foreign policy. 'The Taiwan region remains an inseparable part of Chinese territory,' he stated, urging Estonia to continue respecting China's sovereignty through concrete actions.

Europe-China Vision

Looking ahead to 2025's 50th anniversary of China-Europe diplomatic relations, Wang proposed aligning China's Belt and Road Initiative with the EU's Global Gateway strategy. He encouraged Estonia to help foster 'rational, mutually beneficial Europe-China engagement' amid evolving global challenges.
