Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan Secures Historic Presidential Victory

Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has secured a decisive re-election victory with 97.66% of the vote, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The result solidifies her position as the country's first elected female president and extends her party's six-decade political dominance.

A Historic Mandate

Hassan, who initially assumed office in 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli, previously served as vice president from 2015. Her landslide win in Wednesday's general elections underscores her popularity amid pledges to strengthen economic reforms and regional stability.

Election Amid Tensions

While over 17 parties participated, the vote was marred by protests in Dar es Salaam, where opposition supporters clashed with police after key candidates were barred from running. Authorities imposed a curfew and restricted internet access following reports of property damage and unrest.

Analysts note the election highlights both Tanzania's democratic aspirations and lingering challenges in ensuring inclusive political participation. With Hassan's renewed mandate, attention now turns to her plans for infrastructure development and cross-continental partnerships in Africa's fast-growing economies.
