Mainland China Vows Firm Action Against ‘Taiwan Independence’ Separatism

Chinese authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to national unity through legal measures targeting alleged separatist activities, as tensions over cross-strait relations take center stage. Police in Chongqing launched a criminal investigation this week against Shen Pao-yang, a figure accused of establishing the Kuma Academy – described by officials as a 'Taiwan independence' organization.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Tuesday that the probe represents a 'just and necessary' move to protect national sovereignty. 'Our actions aim to safeguard the interests of Taiwan compatriots and maintain territorial integrity,' Chen emphasized during a press briefing.

The announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny of cross-strait relations, with Beijing characterizing pro-independence activities as the 'gravest immediate threat' to stability in the Taiwan Strait. Authorities specifically criticized what they called attempts to 'incite war' through secessionist agendas.

Chen extended an olive branch to residents of Taiwan, urging cooperation: 'We call on our compatriots to jointly oppose separatist forces and work toward integrated development.' The statement aligns with Beijing's longstanding position of promoting economic and cultural exchanges while opposing formal independence for the island.

Legal experts note the investigation highlights China's increasing use of domestic law to address cross-strait political disputes. The case against Shen marks the latest development in Beijing's multi-pronged approach to Taiwan affairs, combining legal, economic, and diplomatic measures.
