Trump Halts National Guard Deployment to San Francisco After Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump reversed plans to deploy National Guard troops to San Francisco this week, citing progress made by local authorities. The decision followed a late-night phone call with Mayor Daniel Lurie, who reportedly assured Trump that the city was addressing public safety concerns "substantially."

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated he initially planned a federal "surge" this Saturday but paused after Lurie requested time to demonstrate improvements. The mayor later confirmed the conversation on social media, emphasizing San Francisco's preference for collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies over military intervention.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between federal and Democratic-led local governments. California Governor Gavin Newsom and other leaders had prepared for weeks to counter potential troop deployments, recalling backlash from similar actions in Los Angeles and Portland earlier this year.

Analysts note this marks Trump's first public retreat from his recent campaign to deploy National Guard units in cities facing crime challenges. Previous deployments to Washington, D.C., and immigration-related operations in Los Angeles drew protests and legal challenges.
