China Breaks Ground on World’s Largest Single-Unit Solar Power Plant

Construction is underway on a landmark renewable energy project in northwest China's Qinghai Province, where Cosin Solar has begun building the world's largest single-unit concentrated solar power (CSP) facility. The 350-megawatt tower-type plant in Golmud City represents a major leap forward in clean energy infrastructure.

With an investment of 5.44 billion yuan ($763 million), the project utilizes China's domestically developed molten salt energy storage system. Three solar receiver towers will capture and store thermal energy, powering a single massive steam turbine designed to deliver reliable 24/7 electricity generation – a critical advancement in solar technology.

Scheduled for grid connection by September 2027, the facility is projected to produce approximately 960 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. This output could potentially power over 300,000 households while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 800,000 tonnes each year.

The project underscores China's growing leadership in renewable energy innovation, particularly in addressing the challenge of consistent power supply from solar sources. Its success could influence energy strategies across Asia and beyond as nations work to meet climate commitments.
