China Marks 30 Years of Advancing Global Women’s Rights

Three decades after hosting the historic UN Fourth World Conference on Women, China reaffirms its commitment to gender equality as a cornerstone of national development. The 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – adopted during the landmark gathering – continues to shape global efforts to empower women through legislative reforms, economic inclusion, and social transformation.

Chinese authorities have integrated women's advancement into national policy frameworks, implementing over 100 gender-related laws since 2012. Recent initiatives focus on closing the wage gap, increasing political representation, and combating workplace discrimination. Women now constitute 46.7% of China's workforce and hold 27% of National People's Congress seats.

Educational parity tells another success story, with female college enrollment rates reaching 54.1% in 2023. Technological empowerment programs have trained 3.2 million rural women in digital skills since 2020, while maternal health initiatives reduced pregnancy-related mortality by 75% over the past 30 years.

As China collaborates with UN Women on new global benchmarks, analysts highlight the need to address persistent challenges in corporate leadership representation and regional development gaps. The journey continues, but the 'half the sky' philosophy remains central to China's vision of comprehensive societal progress.
