Cape Verde Makes History with First-Ever FIFA World Cup Qualification

Cape Verde, a nation of 525,000 residents, has secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a decisive 3-0 victory over Eswatini in African qualifying. The Blue Sharks clinched their group with goals from Dailon Livramento, Willy Semedo, and Stopira, sparking jubilant celebrations in the capital of Praia.

The volcanic archipelago becomes the second-smallest country by population to qualify for the tournament, following Iceland in 2018. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the achievement in a video message: "What a historic moment… Your stars will become global and power a new generation of football lovers."

Fans packed the stadium after tickets sold out in record time, with the government declaring a half-day holiday to allow nationwide viewership. The team now prepares to represent Africa among 48 nations at the expanded 2026 tournament.

Nine African group winners secured direct qualification, while four runners-up will compete in November's playoff round. Cape Verde's triumph highlights football's growing reach, proving small nations can achieve global sporting success through strategic development.
