The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has condemned a second Israeli drone attack near its personnel in southern Lebanon this month, calling it a "serious violation" of international agreements. The incident occurred on Friday when an Israeli drone dropped a grenade near a UN position in Kafer Kela, lightly injuring one peacekeeper. UNIFIL reported two drones were observed near the site prior to the attack.
"This shows disregard for the safety of peacekeepers working under the Security Council’s mandate," UNIFIL stated, referencing Resolution 1701, which aims to maintain stability along the Lebanon-Israel border. The mission urged Israel to halt attacks on or near UN personnel.
This follows a similar October 2 incident in Maroun al-Ras, where Israeli drones dropped grenades near peacekeepers and Lebanese soldiers assisting civilian cleanup efforts. UNIFIL positions have faced multiple threats since cross-border clashes escalated after the 2023 Gaza war, drawing international criticism of Israel’s actions.
Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, tensions persist. Israel has continued periodic strikes in Lebanon, citing security concerns, and remains in border areas past a February withdrawal deadline. Analysts warn the pattern risks further destabilizing the region.
