China, Switzerland Strengthen Ties in Trade, Global Governance

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized deepening bilateral cooperation with Switzerland during high-level talks on Friday, framing the partnership as a model for cross-cultural collaboration amid global uncertainties. The discussions in Bellinzona marked the fourth round of China-Switzerland Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue, yielding agreements on trade modernization and multilateral governance reforms.

75 Years of Diplomatic Innovation

Wang highlighted Switzerland's historic role as one of the first Western nations to recognize the People's Republic of China in 1950. "Our nations have proven that differences in social systems need not hinder mutual respect and practical cooperation," he stated, noting Switzerland's continued adherence to the one-China policy.

Economic Partnership 2.0

Both countries are accelerating upgrades to their landmark free trade agreement – the first between China and a continental European economy. The revised pact will expand zero-tariff coverage across sectors from precision machinery to agricultural products, while new collaborations in AI and green technology aim to create what Wang called "high-quality cooperation results."

Global Governance Vision

Against rising protectionism, Wang outlined joint efforts to strengthen multilateral frameworks through China's Global Governance Initiative. The two nations agreed to support the newly established International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), with Switzerland expected to leverage its neutral diplomatic tradition in conflict resolution.

Cultural Bridges

To boost people-to-people ties, China announced plans to extend visa-free entry for Swiss citizens and enhance tourism facilitation measures. The moves aim to build what Wang described as "a brighter future through mutual understanding" between the Alpine nation and the world's second-largest economy.
