Chinese Cardiologist Pioneers Liberia’s First Heart Care Unit

At Monrovia's John F. Kennedy Medical Center, a team from China's Heilongjiang Province led by cardiologist Dr. Yuan Jingwei has achieved a medical milestone: establishing Liberia's first dedicated cardiology department. For patients who previously traveled abroad for heart treatment, this unit represents newfound hope in a nation where specialized cardiac care was once nonexistent.

Operating in temporary facilities, Dr. Yuan's team conducts over 1,000 consultations annually while training Liberian medical staff in diagnosis and treatment protocols. Their mobile clinics extend services to remote villages, addressing conditions from hypertension to congenital heart defects. 'Every stabilized heartbeat here is a shared victory,' Yuan remarked during a recent outreach mission.

Over 900 days of cross-continent collaboration have yielded tangible results: 37 trained local clinicians, 214 complex surgeries completed, and a sustainable care model taking root. The initiative forms part of China's broader health cooperation programs in Africa, blending technical expertise with grassroots capacity-building.
