Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived in Athens on Monday following her deportation by Israeli authorities, sparking renewed debate over humanitarian access to Gaza. Thunberg was detained after joining an international aid flotilla attempting to breach Israel’s maritime blockade of the Palestinian territory.
The 21-year-old activist accused Israel of “violating international law by blocking essential supplies” during a press conference at Athens port. Over 340 activists from 30 countries have reportedly been deported since the flotilla campaign began last month.
Israeli security officials maintain they are “protecting national sovereignty” while allowing approved aid through land crossings. “All participants were treated according to protocol,” stated an Israeli government spokesperson.
The incident highlights growing international scrutiny of Gaza’s humanitarian situation amid escalating regional tensions. Analysts suggest such confrontations could influence diplomatic relations between Israel and European nations ahead of key UN climate negotiations.
