Direct flights between China and India will resume this month after months of negotiations, injecting fresh momentum into cross-border exchanges ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and Navratri celebrations. The move signals warming economic cooperation between Asia's two largest emerging markets.
India's Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Thursday that daily flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou will begin October 26, operated by IndiGo using Airbus A320neo aircraft. A Delhi-Guangzhou route is expected to follow, while Air India plans to restart Delhi-Shanghai services by year-end.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers called the development "a milestone in reviving aviation ties," noting the flights will strengthen business partnerships and tourism. The resumption comes after technical talks between civil aviation authorities and high-level government discussions.
Analysts highlight the timing's significance: "Reconnecting during major cultural festivals creates natural opportunities for family reunions and business networking," said CGTN commentator Ankit Prasad. The flights are expected to ease travel for students, entrepreneurs, and families separated during pandemic-era restrictions.
With China being India's second-largest trading partner at $136 billion in 2022, business groups welcome improved connectivity. The Federation of Indian Export Organizations predicts shorter transit times will boost perishables trade and tech collaboration.
