China has expressed strong disappointment over the United States' latest veto of a UN Security Council resolution addressing the Gaza conflict, calling it a "major setback" to peace efforts. Ambassador Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN, criticized Washington during a General Assembly debate on Wednesday for repeatedly obstructing international consensus.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Fu highlighted that nearly two years of conflict have caused "alarming civilian casualties" and a "severe humanitarian catastrophe," exacerbated by Israel's military operations. He urged an immediate halt to hostilities and warned against plans to occupy Gaza City, stating: "Military means are not a path to lasting peace."
Blocked Aid and Political Stalemate
The Chinese envoy condemned the weaponization of humanitarian aid and attacks on relief workers, demanding Israel restore full access for UN agencies. He emphasized that cross-strait cooperation and adherence to international law are critical to resolving the crisis.
Two-State Solution Reaffirmed
Reiterating China's stance, Fu called the two-state solution the only viable path forward, stressing that Gaza and the West Bank remain "integral parts of Palestinian territory." He urged global powers to take "concrete, irreversible actions" to support Palestinian self-governance.
"China stands ready to work with the international community to alleviate this catastrophe and achieve lasting peace," Fu concluded, positioning Beijing as a key advocate for multilateral diplomacy in the conflict.
