China has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue, urging global powers to prioritize diplomacy over sanctions or threats. The call comes after the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution co-sponsored by China and Russia to extend technical provisions under Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized Tuesday that political negotiations remain "the only viable option" to address concerns about Iran's nuclear program. "Pushing unilateral pressure tactics reverses years of diplomatic progress," Guo stated, referencing the U.S. decision to abandon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 as a key factor in the current impasse.
The proposed resolution aimed to create breathing room for renewed negotiations while maintaining existing verification mechanisms. Analysts suggest the move reflects China's growing role as a mediator in global security matters, particularly in energy-rich West Asia.
"We call on all parties to demonstrate flexibility and sincerity," Guo added, noting China will continue working with international partners to find solutions that balance regional security concerns with Iran's right to peaceful nuclear development.
