China's tourism sector has achieved unprecedented growth in the first half of 2025, with domestic trips surpassing 3.29 billion – a historic milestone signaling strong post-pandemic recovery. Tourism spending reached 3.15 trillion yuan ($443 billion), according to Minister of Culture and Tourism Sun Yeli.
The figures highlight China's success in revitalizing its tourism industry through strategic initiatives under the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). Over 2,600 new A-rated scenic areas have been developed nationwide, bringing the total to 16,500. Remarkably, 97% of county-level regions now boast these quality-certified attractions.
Vice Minister Wang Jianhua emphasized the government's focus on diversified tourism products, including specialized services for aging populations. Elderly-friendly tourist trains transported over 930,000 passengers between January and August 2025, with seniors comprising 80% of travelers.
This tourism boom reflects:
- Accelerated infrastructure development
- Growing domestic consumption power
- Innovative service models catering to diverse demographics
Industry analysts suggest these trends position China's tourism sector as a key driver of economic stability and cultural exchange.
