China Strengthens Climate Pledges with Ambitious 2035 Targets

China has unveiled sweeping updates to its climate action plan at the UN Climate Summit 2025, pledging to cut economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10% from peak levels by 2035. The announcement marks a significant escalation of the country's environmental commitments, with President Xi Jinping declaring the move demonstrates China's "rock-solid resolve" to lead global climate governance.

Ambitious Targets for a Greener Future

The updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) include plans to:

  • Boost non-fossil fuels to over 30% of total energy consumption
  • Expand wind and solar capacity to 3,600 gigawatts – six times 2020 levels
  • Increase forest stock volume to 24+ billion cubic meters

Building on Past Success

China's confidence stems from measurable progress since announcing its 2060 carbon neutrality goal. Official data shows non-fossil energy consumption rose to 19.8% in 2024 from 15.9% in 2020, with wind/solar capacity and forest stock already meeting 2030 targets early.

"Green transition is the trend of our time," President Xi emphasized in his virtual summit address, urging sustained international cooperation. The commitments reinforce China's role in driving green development through South-South climate partnerships and Belt and Road environmental initiatives.
