U.S. Restricts Iranian Diplomats’ Access to Luxury Goods, Wholesale Clubs

The United States has imposed new restrictions on Iranian diplomats attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, barring them from shopping at wholesale club stores like Costco and purchasing luxury items such as high-end watches, jewelry, and vehicles priced above $60,000. The measures, announced by the U.S. State Department on Monday, aim to intensify pressure on Iran amid ongoing diplomatic tensions.

Under the rules, Iranian delegates must now seek U.S. government approval for memberships at wholesale retailers and purchases exceeding $1,000. The restrictions also confine diplomats to designated areas near UN headquarters unless conducting official business. A State Department statement described the move as part of efforts to apply “maximum pressure” on Tehran, emphasizing that access to luxury goods and club stores constitutes a “benefit” requiring oversight.

The policy, set to be formalized in the Federal Register this week, uniquely targets Iran among UN member states. Over 150 global leaders are currently in New York for UNGA’s High-level Week, but Iranian representatives face the strictest limitations. Analysts suggest the move reflects broader U.S. strategies to curb Iran’s international engagement while signaling resolve to allies and adversaries alike.
