China Showcases Women’s Rights Progress at UN Anniversary Event

China reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment at a high-level UN meeting in New York this week, marking 30 years since the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Huang Xiaowei, a senior official from the National Working Committee on Children and Women, highlighted China’s transformative policies and international collaborations during her address.

Huang noted that China has trained over 200,000 women from 180 countries and regions through initiatives like the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education, established in 2015. She emphasized China’s role as host of the 1995 conference, which set global benchmarks for gender equality, and its ongoing efforts to fulfill those commitments.

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the country has implemented four national women’s development programs and built a legal framework with more than 100 laws protecting women’s rights. These measures have improved access to education, healthcare, employment, and political participation for over 690 million women, according to Huang.

‘China will continue working with the international community to promote women’s development and build a shared future,’ Huang stated, underscoring cross-border collaboration as a key theme of her speech.
