Cross-border travel between the Chinese mainland and ASEAN countries has reached new heights, with over 25.24 million trips recorded from January to August 2025 – an 11.2% increase compared to the same period last year. The latest data from China's National Immigration Administration (NIA) highlights deepening people-to-people connections across Asia's fastest-growing economic corridor.
Outbound travel from the Chinese mainland to ASEAN nations grew steadily at 3.7%, totaling 14.5 million journeys. Meanwhile, inbound tourism to the Chinese mainland surged 27.5%, surpassing 10 million arrivals. Notably, most ASEAN visitors benefited from China's expanded visa-free entry policies, reflecting efforts to streamline regional mobility.
"These numbers demonstrate the tangible results of our shared commitment to connectivity," an NIA spokesperson noted, adding that new facilitation measures will be introduced to strengthen economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. Analysts suggest the travel boom could accelerate progress on the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 upgrade negotiations.
