China's top legislator Zhao Leji emphasized deepening strategic cooperation with Timor-Leste during talks on Friday with Maria Fernanda Lay, president of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste, in Beijing. The discussions centered on advancing bilateral relations, expanding Belt and Road collaboration, and fostering a 'community with a shared future.'
Zhao, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, reaffirmed China's support for Timor-Leste's 'development path suited to its national conditions' while safeguarding sovereignty and security. He urged both sides to 'consolidate political mutual trust' and accelerate infrastructure, renewable energy, and agricultural cooperation under existing frameworks.
Lay thanked China for its role in supporting Timor-Leste's ASEAN membership bid and reiterated adherence to the one-China principle. She proposed expanding partnerships in scientific innovation, special economic zones, and cultural exchanges to 'bring tangible benefits to residents.'
The meeting coincided with commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the World Anti-Fascist War victory, with both leaders pledging to strengthen multilateral coordination among Global South nations.
