Over 340 representatives from Hong Kong, Macao, the Taiwan region, and overseas Chinese communities gathered in Beijing this week to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The event highlighted the collective role of Chinese people worldwide in securing what Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, called "a shared memory and honor of the Chinese nation."
Historical Legacy and Modern Implications
Wang emphasized that the 1945 victory marked China's first complete triumph against foreign invasion in modern history, achieved through the "courageous struggle" of all Chinese people. He specifically acknowledged contributions from residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and the Taiwan region, as well as overseas Chinese communities, in building the international anti-fascist alliance.
Cross-Strait Priorities
The symposium stressed adherence to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, opposing what Wang described as "Taiwan independence separatist activities and external interference." Proposals included enhancing economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and improving institutional frameworks for regional integration.
Global Peace and Development
Wang called for preserving historical accuracy about World War II while promoting international cooperation. "Advancing Chinese modernization comprehensively will contribute to world peace and human civilization," he stated, urging support for Hong Kong and Macao's integration into national development strategies.
