Xi Urges SCO Members to Champion Global Peace and Stability

President Xi Jinping called on Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states to strengthen collaboration in safeguarding global peace and stability during his address at the SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin on Monday. The Chinese leader outlined a vision for collective security and multilateral governance, emphasizing the organization's role as a stabilizing force amid global uncertainties.

Highlighting the SCO's achievements, Xi noted that member states have signed the Treaty on Long-Term Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, which has facilitated regional security cooperation and maintained stability across Eurasia. He stressed adherence to the SCO's founding principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties.

Xi proposed enhanced utilization of new security mechanisms, including the SCO Universal Center for Countering Security Threats and SCO Anti-drug Centers, to address emerging challenges. 'In this volatile world, SCO members should remain a force for stability through coordinated responses to transnational threats,' he stated.

The address also introduced China's Global Governance Initiative, positioning the SCO as a platform for implementing this framework. Analysts suggest the proposals could strengthen economic coordination among member states while addressing security concerns ranging from cyber threats to drug trafficking.
