Xi, Tokayev Strengthen Ties at SCO Summit in Tianjin

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held high-level talks in Tianjin on Saturday, underscoring deepening bilateral cooperation ahead of the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. The meeting highlighted shared commitments to economic collaboration and regional stability as Central Asia’s geopolitical significance grows.

President Xi emphasized mutual support on “core interests and major concerns,” pledging to expand trade, energy, and infrastructure partnerships. The SCO Summit, scheduled for August 31 to September 1, will convene leaders from member states to address security, economic integration, and multilateral governance.

Analysts note Kazakhstan’s strategic role as a key Belt and Road Initiative partner, with bilateral trade reaching $31.5 billion in 2023. Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s alignment with China’s development vision, stating: “Our partnership serves as a model for Eurasian cooperation.”

The talks concluded with agreements to enhance cross-border logistics and green energy projects, aligning with the SCO’s 2025 priorities of sustainable growth and digital connectivity.
