Myanmar’s Acting President Attends SCO Summit in Tianjin

Myanmar's Acting President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Tianjin on Saturday ahead of the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, marking a significant step in the country's engagement with regional security and economic initiatives. The two-day event, scheduled from August 31 to September 1, will bring together leaders from across Asia to discuss trade partnerships, counterterrorism strategies, and infrastructure development.

Analysts note Myanmar's participation highlights its growing role in Eurasian geopolitics following its 2023 observer status upgrade. "This summit offers Myanmar opportunities to strengthen cross-border energy projects and digital economy collaboration," said a Tianjin-based diplomatic source familiar with preparatory talks.

The SCO, which accounts for 40% of global GDP, is expected to address supply chain resilience and climate-related challenges. Business leaders anticipate new agreements on green technology transfers and smart city development across member states.

This year's host city, Tianjin, has implemented enhanced security protocols while showcasing its Free Trade Zone achievements. Cultural events featuring traditional Chinese puppetry and ASEAN-inspired art installations will accompany formal negotiations, blending diplomacy with regional heritage.
