A Chinese mainland spokesperson reaffirmed the legitimacy of Taiwan compatriots' participation in historical commemorations during a Friday press briefing, countering recent objections from the island's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities.
Zhu Fenglian of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office stated that Taiwan residents attending Beijing's September 3 events commemorating the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression demonstrate "national unity and historical responsibility." The remarks came in response to reported threats from DPP-aligned figures against former Kuomintang members engaging with mainland activities.
"All Chinese people – including our Taiwan compatriots – sacrificed profoundly for national liberation and Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation," Zhu emphasized. She characterized the participation as crucial for preserving collective memory and advancing cross-strait relations.
The spokesperson criticized DPP authorities for employing "obstruction and intimidation tactics," stating such actions "betray national identity and cross-strait solidarity." Zhu warned that mainland authorities would legally address individuals supporting "Taiwan independence" separatist activities.
Historical records show Taiwan contributed significantly to anti-fascist efforts during WWII, with over 200,000 island residents reportedly participating in resistance operations before Japan's 1945 surrender.
