The Greater Bay Area (GBA) has taken a significant leap toward energy resilience with the operational launch of the first unit of the Meizhou Pumped Storage Power Station Phase II on August 26. This landmark project, the first major energy storage initiative under China's 14th Five-Year Plan in the GBA, marks a critical step in balancing renewable energy integration and grid stability for one of Asia's most dynamic economic hubs.
With an hourly output of 300,000 kWh—enough to power 50,000 households daily—the facility is already bolstering Guangdong's clean energy supply. All electricity generated will be traded on open markets, reflecting the region's push toward market-driven sustainability. The project has already raised Guangdong's pumped storage capacity to 1.5 million kW, with full operational status expected to deliver 1.2 million kW. Once completed, it will help propel the GBA's total pumped storage capacity beyond 10 million kW, reinforcing energy security for over 86 million residents and businesses.
Analysts highlight the project's role in supporting the GBA's transition to low-carbon industries while addressing peak electricity demands. Its success could serve as a blueprint for other Asian economies seeking to harmonize rapid urbanization with climate goals.
