As the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) prepares for its upcoming summit in Tianjin, Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev sat down with CMG's He Yanke to discuss the bloc's evolution and its vision for a multipolar world. With 26 member states, observers, and dialogue partners now under its umbrella, the SCO has solidified its position as a cornerstone of Eurasian cooperation.
"The 'Shanghai Spirit'—mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, and respect—remains our compass," Yermekbayev emphasized, highlighting the organization's role in fostering economic integration and security coordination across Asia.
From Regional Bloc to Global Player
Since its founding in 2001, the SCO has expanded its reach into South and West Asia, creating a market encompassing nearly half of humanity. Under China's 2024–2025 presidency, the organization has prioritized digital economy collaboration and infrastructure connectivity, with Yermekbayev noting "unprecedented opportunities" for cross-border trade and sustainable development.
China's Strategic Vision
The Secretary-General praised Beijing's call for building a "common home" of solidarity and prosperity, aligning with the SCO's focus on counterterrorism, energy security, and cultural exchange. "China's development model offers valuable lessons in balancing growth with stability," he remarked, pointing to recent investments in green technology corridors across member states.
Road to Tianjin
With the summit expected to address food security and AI governance, Yermekbayev confirmed plans for a joint statement on climate resilience—a testament to the SCO's growing influence in shaping global agendas. As over 50 heads of state prepare to convene, all eyes turn to Tianjin as Asia's premier multilateral platform charts its next chapter.
