Deadly Shooting Mars NYC Community Basketball Game

A shooting at a community basketball game in New York City’s Haffen Park left one dead and four injured on Saturday evening, casting a shadow over a back-to-school event meant to foster local unity. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed the incident occurred around 7:27 p.m., with multiple shooters opening fire during the game.

Among the victims, a 32-year-old man sustained a fatal chest wound, while a 17-year-old girl was critically injured by a gunshot to the face. Three others transported themselves to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Four suspects were detained, and multiple firearms were recovered, though charges remain pending as investigations continue.

The NYPD emphasized the event’s tragic contrast with its intended purpose, noting the game was organized to strengthen community ties ahead of the school year. While the motive remains unclear, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about urban safety and gun violence in public spaces.
