Chinese High School Band Shines at U.S. Drum Corps Championship

A spirited high school marching band from China captivated audiences at the 2025 Drum Corps International World Championships in Indiana this week, marking a milestone in cross-cultural artistic exchange. The event brought together elite performers from over 15 countries and regions, with the Chinese contingent making their debut appearance.

The young musicians from Shanghai Jingye High School delivered a 12-minute routine blending traditional Chinese folk melodies with contemporary percussion arrangements. Their performance featured innovative choreography incorporating elements of martial arts and silk ribbon dancing, earning standing ovations from the 25,000-strong crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Band director Li Wei told reporters: "This isn't just about competition – it's about building bridges through music. Our students have been preparing Mandarin-language workshops for American peers, sharing insights into China's rich musical heritage."

The trip forms part of a broader cultural exchange initiative endorsed by educational authorities in both countries. While in the U.S., the band members are scheduled to collaborate with local music programs in Chicago and Indianapolis, with reciprocal visits planned for American students in 2026.

Music educators highlight the growing importance of such exchanges, particularly among youth organizations. Dr. Emily Carter, a Stanford University ethnomusicology professor, noted: "When young artists collaborate, they create shared cultural vocabulary that transcends political boundaries. These students aren't just performers – they're cultural ambassadors."
