China Calls for Global Unity in Parliamentary Cooperation

China's top legislator Zhao Leji emphasized the urgent need for international parliamentary collaboration to address global challenges during the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva this week. As chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, Zhao outlined a vision for legislative bodies to strengthen multilateralism and foster equitable global governance.

Addressing Shared Challenges

Zhao highlighted growing threats to peace and development, urging parliaments worldwide to promote 'common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security.' He stressed respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, while advocating for nations' rights to pursue independent development paths aligned with their unique conditions.

Economic and Cultural Bridges

The legislator called for enhanced legal frameworks to support the World Trade Organization-centered trading system, positioning parliamentary cooperation as key to achieving mutual economic benefits. He also championed cultural diversity, stating: 'Civilizations thrive through dialogue, not confrontation,' while proposing expanded cultural exchanges to build understanding.

Path to Equitable Governance

Reiterating China's commitment to three global initiatives – Development, Security, and Civilization – Zhao pledged the NPC's readiness to deepen ties with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and foreign legislatures. He emphasized creating 'a community with a shared future for humanity' through strengthened international legal cooperation and adherence to true multilateralism.
