Mainland Voices Firm Opposition to Taiwan Leader’s U.S. Transit Attempt

The Chinese mainland has issued a strong rebuke against Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's planned U.S. transit, calling it a provocative move that threatens cross-strait stability. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Wednesday that any form of 'stopover diplomacy' undermines the one-China principle and risks escalating regional tensions.

"There is no so-called 'transit' – only calculated attempts to challenge China's sovereignty," Chen emphasized during a press briefing. The remarks come as Lai prepares for an August trip involving stops in Paraguay and the U.S., with Beijing warning of "serious consequences" for any nation facilitating such engagements.

Analysts suggest the development could impact U.S.-China relations ahead of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting, while business communities monitor potential ripple effects across the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese mainland remains committed to peaceful reunification but maintains the right to take "all necessary measures" against separatist activities, according to the statement.
