UN Official Shares Syrian Refugee’s Harrowing Survival Tale

UN Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming has spotlighted the resilience of refugees through the Chinese edition of A Hope More Powerful than the Sea, recounting the true story of Syrian survivor Doaa Al Zamel. The book details her four-day ordeal adrift at sea after a shipwreck claimed 500 lives, including her fiancé, while she protected two infants amid the chaos.

Fleming emphasized the story's significance during a recent PAGE X program event, which invites global thought leaders to share impactful literary works. The initiative aims to broaden access to transformative narratives, fostering empathy and understanding of contemporary crises.

Doaa's account underscores the human cost of displacement while highlighting extraordinary courage. PAGE X, produced by a team including Executive Producer Zhang Jingwen and Editor Zhang Yuying, continues to bridge global audiences with stories that reflect Asia's interconnected role in humanitarian challenges.
