Chengdu Ignites World Games 2025 with Historic Torch Relay

History unfolded in Sichuan Province as the World Games 2025 torch relay commenced Saturday, launching a 10-day countdown to Asia's next major sporting spectacle. For the first time in the event's 42-year history, organizers introduced a multi-city flame journey spanning 11 kilometers across Chengdu, Deyang, and Meishan – a symbolic nod to China's western development strategy.

The ceremonial flame ignited at the Sanxingdui Museum, where 3,000-year-old bronze artifacts witnessed modern athletic ambition. Rhythmic gymnast Huang Zhangjiayang, fresh from Olympic gold in Paris, carried the torch past crowds waving panda-shaped banners. Table tennis legend Ma Long closed the inaugural leg, his racket-handling precision mirroring the relay's meticulous planning.

Cultural landmarks feature prominently along the route, with stops at the Jinsha Site Museum's sunbird golden foil exhibit and the Chengdu Panda Base's bamboo groves. This fusion of ancient heritage and ecological conservation aligns with the Games' 'Park City' theme.

With 34 sports and 255 events scheduled – including drone racing and breakdancing – the Games will test Chengdu's post-Universiade infrastructure. Organizers confirmed completion of 24 trial competitions, from beach handball to finswimming, ensuring venues meet international standards.

'This relay represents more than athletic tradition,' stated Games spokesperson Li Wei. 'It's a bridge connecting China's western region to the global sports community.' As torchbearers approach Tianfu International Sports Center, all eyes turn to August 7 when 5,000 athletes from 100+ countries and regions will converge on Sichuan's capital.
