Escalation Amid Displacement
Deir al-Balah has become a refuge for hundreds of thousands displaced during the 21-month Israel-Hamas conflict. Residents fled westward after evacuation orders, with local medics reporting tank shelling struck homes and mosques, killing at least three people. The Gaza Health Ministry recorded 130 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries in the past 24 hours—one of the deadliest periods in recent weeks.
UN Facilities Targeted
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric condemned strikes near two UN guesthouses, emphasizing that "civilian sites must be protected." The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed attacks on its staff residence and warehouse, with Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stating two staff members and relatives were detained by Israeli forces. Three were later released, while one remains in custody.
Ceasefire Talks at Risk
The violence complicates Qatar- and Egypt-mediated ceasefire negotiations backed by the U.S. A Hamas official told Reuters the group is reconsidering a proposed 60-day truce and hostage deal due to rising casualties and starvation risks.
