US Troops Withdraw from Los Angeles Amid Shifting Protest Response

Nearly 2,000 California National Guard troops are departing Los Angeles following a Trump administration order to halve their presence, marking a significant reduction in federal forces deployed during recent protests over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. The Pentagon confirmed Monday that 700 Marines will also be withdrawn from the city.

The troops were initially deployed in June to support local authorities during widespread demonstrations against controversial immigration enforcement operations. While officials cite improved stability as the reason for the drawdown, analysts suggest the move reflects evolving strategies for handling civil unrest ahead of upcoming elections.

Residents and business owners remain divided about the military presence, with some praising improved security and others criticizing the escalation of tensions. The withdrawal coincides with renewed debates about federal intervention in urban law enforcement matters.
