Green Turtles Return to Xisha Islands as Conservation Efforts Pay Off

In a promising sign for marine biodiversity, green turtles are returning to nest on the Xisha Islands in record numbers this year. Located in Sansha City, Hainan Province, the archipelago has reported 81 sea turtle nests in monitored areas as of July 6 – a 30-nest increase compared to 2023. The discovery of two new nesting sites on Yongxing Island marks the first such activity observed there in recent years, signaling ecological recovery in the region.

Green turtles, classified as first-class protected animals in China, are thriving as conservation measures take effect. Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species inhabit Chinese waters, with the Xisha Islands hosting the nation’s largest nesting grounds. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reveals a steady rise in nesting activity since monitoring began, attributed to stricter environmental protections and habitat restoration.

"The expansion of nesting sites to Yongxing and Zhaoshu Islands shows improved reef conditions," said a marine biologist familiar with the project. "These gentle creatures are highly sensitive to environmental changes – their return is a barometer of ecological health."

Authorities have implemented measures including beach cleanups, artificial shade structures, and community education programs to protect nesting sites. The trend offers hope for global sea turtle conservation while underscoring China’s growing role in marine ecosystem preservation.
