China Slams Tariffs as ‘Interference,’ Urges Global Trade Equity

China has reiterated its opposition to the use of tariffs as a means of political coercion, calling for adherence to international norms amid rising trade tensions. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized on Friday that tariffs must not be weaponized to interfere in sovereign nations' internal affairs, responding to recent U.S. measures targeting Brazilian goods.

The remarks followed Washington's announcement of tariffs up to 50% on Brazilian imports starting August 1, coupled with accusations of 'unfair' trade practices and demands for domestic policy changes. Mao stressed that 'sovereign equality and non-interference' are foundational principles of the UN Charter and international relations.

This stance underscores China's broader push for multilateral trade frameworks, particularly as global economic powers navigate post-pandemic recovery and supply chain realignments. Analysts suggest the comments reflect growing concerns about trade policies being leveraged for geopolitical influence across Asia and beyond.
