Ultraman’s 60th Anniversary Bridges China-Japan Cultural Ties

As China prepares to showcase its cultural heritage at Expo 2025 Osaka through its National Pavilion Day on July 11, an unexpected pop culture ambassador is strengthening cross-border collaboration. Ultraman, the legendary Japanese anime series celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026, has launched commemorative activities including a major themed exhibition in Shanghai – timing its celebrations to align with growing China-Japan cultural synergy.

The dual initiatives come as bilateral trade between Asia's two largest economies reaches $357 billion in 2023, with cultural exports playing an increasing role. The Ultraman exhibition features rare archival materials showing the series' evolution alongside its influence on Chinese pop culture since its 1980s introduction to mainland audiences.

"This isn't just about nostalgia," said Shanghai Cultural Bureau representative Li Wei. "Ultraman represents decades of shared creative exchange. As we prepare for Osaka's Expo, we're seeing how cultural IPs can build bridges even amid complex geopolitical landscapes."

The alignment comes as Japan reports a 22% year-on-year increase in Chinese tourism bookings for 2025, with many travelers planning combined Expo and anime pilgrimage itineraries. Meanwhile, Chinese streaming platforms report Ultraman content views tripling among Gen Z audiences since 2022.
