Lemi Ponifasio, World Theatre Ambassador for the International Theatre Institute under UNESCO, has called for China to embrace a more prominent role in global cultural exchanges during his address at the Global Civilizations Dialogue Ministerial Meeting in Beijing. The renowned director, who recently collaborated with artists from the Yi ethnic group in Sichuan Province for an international tour, stressed the need for China to leverage its rich heritage to shape contemporary artistic narratives.
"While China is undeniably a political and economic leader, its artists remain underrepresented in global theater circles," Ponifasio observed. He highlighted the success of his Sichuan-based project, which showcased traditional Yi music and dance adaptations to audiences across Europe and Asia, as proof of China\u2019s untapped potential. "Cultural confidence is key," he added, urging Chinese institutions to invest in cross-border collaborations that bridge historical traditions with modern creativity.
The remarks come as China intensifies efforts to expand cultural diplomacy initiatives. Analysts suggest such partnerships could create new opportunities for investors eyeing Asia\u2019s creative industries while offering diaspora communities deeper connections to regional heritage.
