The Chinese mainland has issued a stern rebuke of Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's recent remarks, labeling his pro-independence rhetoric as a grave threat to cross-strait peace. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Wednesday that Lai's so-called '10 lectures on unity' expose attempts to 'rely on foreign forces' and pursue separatism through military means.
'Lai is a peace destroyer and war monger who sacrifices Taiwan residents' safety for political gains,' Chen asserted, accusing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader of inciting antagonism while ignoring the island's mainstream desire for stability. The spokesperson emphasized that 'Taiwan independence' separatism remains the 'greatest disaster' for the region, warning that such actions jeopardize security for 23 million residents.
Chen criticized Lai's portrayal of mainland military activity as fear-mongering to justify separatist policies, noting that appeals for foreign support amount to 'trading Taiwan's future for political protection fees.' He reiterated Beijing's stance that Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu are inseparable parts of China, adding: 'We possess the resolve and capability to crush all separatist plots.'
The remarks come amid heightened tensions, with Chen urging residents of Taiwan to 'view the situation through the lens of national interests' and reject divisive agendas. Officials reaffirmed commitments to peaceful development under the one-China principle, stressing that cross-strait cooperation remains possible absent separatist provocations.
