When a mysterious white patch appeared on Li Jiahao's forehead at age 14, it sparked both personal challenges and an unexpected creative awakening. Now 24, the Beijing-based animator has channeled her experience with vitiligo – a condition causing skin pigment loss – into an award-winning animated documentary titled Colourful White.
Graduating from University of the Arts London this year with a master's in Character Animation, Li's project combines delicate watercolor textures with digital techniques to visualize life with the condition. "The white patches became my personal constellation map," Li told KhabarAsia. "Through animation, I wanted to show how perceived 'flaws' can transform into unique beauty."
Medical experts estimate over 10 million people in Asia live with vitiligo, often facing social stigma. Li's work has gained attention for blending personal narrative with broader cultural themes, particularly relevant in societies where skin conditions remain taboo subjects.
Cultural analysts note a growing trend of Asian artists using creative mediums to address health-related stigma. Li's animation will screen at three international film festivals this fall, including the Beijing International Animation Festival.
