Mainland Spokesperson Condemns Taiwan Leader’s ‘Independence Manifesto’

A Chinese mainland spokesperson has strongly criticized recent remarks by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, labeling them a "Taiwan independence manifesto" that threatens regional stability. The comments came during Lai's second address in his "10 talks in unity" series, which authorities say promotes separatist agendas.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Wednesday that Lai's speech "deliberately distorted history" and sought to "sow social division" on the island. She accused the Taiwan leader of using inflammatory rhetoric to suppress political opposition and advance his "Great Recall" campaign.

Of particular concern was Lai's repeated claim that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are "not subordinate to each other," which Zhu said "provokes conflict" in cross-strait relations. The spokesperson also rejected allegations that mainland efforts to foster economic cooperation constitute "united front infiltration threats."

"Both sides belong to one China," Zhu emphasized, reiterating Beijing's position that peaceful development and eventual reunification remain the only path to lasting stability. She called on residents of Taiwan to recognize what she described as Lai's "hypocrisy" and oppose separatist forces.

The remarks highlight ongoing tensions in cross-strait relations, with analysts noting increased diplomatic friction following recent political developments. Business leaders and regional observers continue monitoring the situation for potential impacts on trade and investment flows.
