Chinese Envoy Calls for Upholding UN Charter Principles
China's envoy to the UN office in Geneva, Chen Xu, strongly criticized recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran during a UN Human Rights Council side event on Monday. The remarks came during a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter organized by the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter.
Multilateralism Under Threat
Chen emphasized that the strikes violated the UN Charter's fundamental principles, stating: "The military actions undermine the purposes of the modern international order." He particularly noted concerns about the U.S. approach of "withdrawing from groups and cutting funding," which he said weakens global cooperation frameworks.
China's Vision for Global Governance
The envoy outlined China's position advocating for conflict resolution through dialogue and supporting UN reforms. "True multilateralism requires respecting international law and prioritizing peace as the foundation for development," Chen told attendees, urging nations to collaborate in safeguarding global stability and universal human rights protections.
