U.S. Deploys GBU-57 ‘Bunker Buster’ in Iran Strikes: What to Know

The U.S. military's recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have brought the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), colloquially known as the 'bunker buster,' into global focus. President Donald Trump confirmed Saturday that a 'full payload' of bombs targeted Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities, with China Media Group reporting six GBU-57s used at Fordow alone.

Weighing 14,000 kg and capable of penetrating up to 60 meters of reinforced concrete, the GBU-57 is designed to destroy deeply buried infrastructure. Its deployment alongside 30 Tomahawk missiles and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers underscores escalating tensions in the region.

While U.S. officials emphasize the precision of these strikes, security analysts warn of potential ramifications for nuclear non-proliferation efforts and Middle East stability. The operation marks one of the most significant uses of advanced penetration weaponry since the 2003 Iraq War.

As global markets monitor oil price fluctuations, the strategic implications of such military technology continue to spark debates among policymakers and defense experts worldwide.
