Kyrgyz Filmmaker Eyes China Collaboration Amid Box Office Boom

Renowned Kyrgyzstani director Aktan Arym Kubat has reignited cross-cultural cinematic dialogue with the premiere of his latest film, Black, Red, Yellow, at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival. Returning to the event two years after serving as a jury member, Kubat now competes for the festival's top honor – the Golden Goblet Award – while eyeing new creative horizons.

In an exclusive interview with CGTN, the filmmaker praised China's rapidly expanding film market, which saw box office revenues surge to $7.7 billion in 2023. "The energy here is electric," Kubat remarked. "Making a film in China is my dream – it's where ancient traditions meet cutting-edge innovation."

The director's comments come as China strengthens cultural ties through initiatives like the Belt and Road Film Alliance. Industry analysts note growing opportunities for international co-productions, particularly with Central Asian filmmakers. "Black, Red, Yellow exemplifies the universal language of cinema," said festival programmer Li Wei. "Such exchanges help audiences discover shared human experiences."
